An event supported by AmCham.

Registration: 13:00 hrs

Register at: www.john-adams.nl

Price: 25 euro

Description: Immigration and diversity: they are the biggest, hottest, most painful issues in the Netherlands. America is the land of diversity. What is the secret to America’s approach? It’s a tiny thing: the hyphen (streepje). Everyone in the U.S. has a dual identity: Mexican-American, Italian-American, Jewish-American, African-American… America tells newcomers: “Become American, join us…but don’t lose your origins!” It has taken a few hundred years, and it has flaws, but American diversity seems to work. The purpose of “Hyphen-Nation” is to pose this question: Can the American diversity format work in the Netherlands?

Location: Heineken Experience Amsterdam - Stadhouderskade 78

Registration: 17:30 hrs.

Price: 15 euro

Description: This year we celebrate 400 years of enduring friendship between the Netherlands and the United States. Four hundred years ago, a Dutch ship called the Half Moon sailed to the shores of what is now Manhattan Island with Captain Henry Hudson at the helm. This lead to the establishment of New Amsterdam and the New Netherland colony. Some 167 years later, in 1776, the Dutch were the first to salute the flag of the United States of America. NY400 celebrates the free spirit, openness, entrepreneurship and tolerance of those Dutch-American pioneers and their impact on international relations today.

The AmCham Young Professionals Committee will organize a special event with guest speakers Russell Shorto and Frans van der Minne.

Description: - Challenges & Prospects in the Social Arena of Rotterdam -

Building on his experience as Chair of the Social Platform Rotterdam, Pieter Winsemius will focus on two burning social issues: the high number of high school dropouts and of prenatal deaths. The AmCham is positively involved in the first area, but especially at the lowest educational levels a still broader approach is needed to keep the most vulnerable youths aboard. The Dutch death rate during pregnancy and immediately after birth has been increasing and has reached unacceptable levels. Rotterdam hospitals have taken the initiative for a breakthrough approach. Pieter Winsemius co-leads the fundraising for this promising innovation.
