Beyond Simple Divides: Addressing Workplace Polarization in a Complex World

Published:

On September 16, AmCham and its Diversity & Inclusion Committee hosted an event, Beyond Simple Divides: Addressing Workplace Polarization in a Complex World. The evening began with an introduction from Mark Poort, Director Social & Public Affairs at Randstad Groep Nederland, and an overview on the topic by Petronella Pietersma, Trainer & Advisor at Zelforganisatie Fabriek.

Randstad research has shown that the biggest impact on business results does not come from societal polarization, but from internal polarization. This can be present in group dynamics, hierarchy, or generational divides, among others. Polarization in these areas can lead to stress, a decline in well-being, operational errors, and employer brand erosion. Addressing issues before they escalate is imperative. To do so, there are three main tools: utilizing leaders, group-level strategy, such as giving a voice to the silent middle in conflict, and practical dialogue or activities to bring employees together.

Following the presentation, Frank Veltkamp, Vice President Human Resources Materials Group EMEA at Avery Dennison, Djoeke Sprenger, Chief People & Culture Officer at The Social Hub, Derk Lemstra, Lawyer / Partner at Stibbe, and Petronella Pietersma formed a panel moderated by Soeradj Ramsamjhal, Lawyer / Senior Associate at Stibbe. The panel allowed for a deep dive into the topic through detailed questions from the audience. While each organization and team is different, it was a consensus of the panel that diverse representation is needed, along with preventative conversations that help build bridges between potential poles before they escalate.
