“Make the Netherlands the international center for healthcare solutions”
- In a report published today, AmCham shows that the Dutch health solution sector (with a prominent role for medtech and pharmaceutical companies) has the potential to become an international health solution hub – and that this would benefit several government ambitions.
- Many of the conditions, plans and ambitions needed for such a hub function are already in place, but these need to be brought together into one overarching action plan.

Amsterdam – The Healthcare Committee of AmCham today publishes a report about the Dutch health solution sector – which consists primarily of medtech and pharmaceutical companies. The first copy of the report ‘Let’s Connect’ was handed over yesterday to Minister Micky Adriaansens of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy.
The AmCham Healthcare Committee describes the sector as a ‘sleeping giant’: it already contributes significantly to the Dutch economy, but its impact could be considerably bigger.
The health solution sector generates 1% of the Dutch Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 1,6% of Dutch jobs. But the true potential shows in other statistics. For instance, the Netherlands is the second most important exporter of medical devices in Europe. And only a few countries worldwide can match the number of patent applications generated by the Dutch sector.
AmCham strongly believes that with the right policy, this potential could be utilized. This would allow the Netherlands to grow into an international health solution hub.
The Dutch cabinet prioritizes economic growth, innovation, strong regional economies, and sustainability. The healthcare solution sector forms a perfect match to these ambitions, as it consists of ‘green’ companies that create economic growth and innovation in all regions of the Netherlands.
The report emphasizes that the Netherlands already possesses many of the conditions, plans, and initiatives needed to grow into an international hub. At the same time, this plethora of plans and initiatives also comes with a risk of fragmentation. AmCham cites this lack of coherence as the Achilles heel in the Dutch approach.
The report is therefore built around the theme ‘Let’s Connect’. AmCham: “We ask the government to connect all the moving parts into one overarching plan – a plan with a clear goal, a long-term vision, and one responsible Minister.”
AmCham emphasizes the importance of multinationals is creating a strong health solution sector. These companies play a key role in the success of foreign health solution hubs like Boston, but they remain relatively scarce in the Netherlands. Thereby, our country loses out on unique knowledge, expertise, and experience. AmCham cites valorization as an example: “The Dutch health solution sector needs to improve its valorization – and this happens to be the expertise of multinationals.”
The Netherlands has significant potential to become an international frontrunner in the health solution sector. At the same time, our country is not the only country with this ambition. Time is therefore of the essence. That is why AmCham asks the government: “Let's connect, and let's do it now.”

AMSTERDAM – De Healthcare Committee van The American Chamber of Commerce in the Netherlands (AmCham) brengt vandaag een rapport uit over de Nederlandse health solution sector – hoofdzakelijk bestaand uit geneesmiddelfabrikanten en medtech bedrijven. Het eerste exemplaar van het rapport ‘Let’s Connect’ werd gisteren overhandigd aan Minister Micky Adriaansens van Economische Zaken en Klimaat.
De AmCham Healthcare Committee omschrijft de sector als een ‘sleeping giant’: de bijdrage aan de Nederlandse economie is groot, maar zou nog veel groter kunnen zijn.
De health solution sector genereert 1% van het Nederlandse bruto nationaal product (BNP) en 1,6% van de werkgelegenheid. Maar de ware potentie blijkt uit andere statistieken. Zo is Nederland na Duitsland de belangrijkste exporteur van medische hulpmiddelen in Europa. Ook kunnen wereldwijd slechts weinig landen tippen aan het aantal patentaanvragen dat de Nederlandse sector genereert.
AmCham gelooft er sterk in dat deze potentie met het juiste beleid verzilverd kan worden. Nederland zou dan uitgroeien tot een internationaal knooppunt van de sector – een ‘health solution hub’.
De huidige regering hecht veel belang aan economisch verdienvermogen, innovatie, sterke regionale economieën en duurzaamheid. Een sterke healthcare solution sector sluit naadloos aan bij deze ambities: de sector bestaat uit duurzame bedrijven die verspreid over het hele land economische groei en innovatie genereren.
Het rapport benadrukt dat Nederland al beschikt over veel van de randvoorwaarden, plannen en initiatieven die nodig zijn om uit te groeien tot een health solution hub. Tegelijkertijd gaat deze diversiteit aan plannen en initiatieven ook gepaard met een risico op fragmentatie. Dit gebrek aan samenhang vormt volgens AmCham de achilleshiel van de Nederlandse aanpak.
Het rapport luistert daarom naar de titel ‘Let’s Connect’. AmCham: “We vragen de regering om alle initiatieven samen te brengen in een overkoepelend plan – met een duidelijk doel, een langetermijnvisie en één eindverantwoordelijke.”
AmCham benadrukt bovendien een belangrijke les van succesvolle ‘health solution hubs’ uit het buitenland: de aanwezigheid van multinationals is cruciaal. In Nederland zijn deze bedrijven echter relatief dun gezaaid. Daarmee gaat belangrijke kennis, expertise en ervaring aan ons land voorbij. Als voorbeeld noemt AmCham valorisatie: “Daar heeft de Nederland health solution sector nog grote stappen te zetten. En laat dat nou bij uitstek de expertise van multinationals zijn.”
Nederland heeft veel potentie om een health solutions koploper te zijn. Maar het is niet het enige land met deze ambitie. Enige haast is dus geboden. Daarom roept AmCham de regering op: “Let’s connect, and let’s do it now.”
